Yep. Life has been wild! I have been pouring all of my energy, heart, and money into the new store!! Wish us lots of fun and sales!!
In the process of opening the store, I have done a major crackdown on the food budget. I'm pretty sure I have reduced it by at least 70% if not more. My most favorite new food item (besides clearance vegan cheese spread on Ezekiel Bread) is dried beans and peas!!
Dried food has always intimidated me. I assumed you needed meat, expertise, or at least some kind of kitchen seniority. Nope! I've made black eyed peas, pinto beans, and lima beans so far.
Here in Louisiana the brand of choice is Camellia, but even the plain old Hy-Top or store brands are great! I don't soak, just simmer for an hour or two. My seasoning usually is: Bragg's salt free sprinkle, garlic powder, and some Liquid Smoke- soooo good and soooo cheap!!
We ate almost a whole pack of Camellia black eyed peas while watching Sherlock Holmes (pretty good!) the other night. Cheap-o and healthy!!
I am experimenting with getting more economical while staying healthy. I'm sticking with millet and sprouted grain breads, but trying to get cheap otherwise.
Any great tips?
I'm reading Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up (and it's FUN!!):
