5-6 Tbsp Coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch
10-15 drops of favourite essential oil
I halved this recipe since the first batch is for experimental purposes. I used lavender, rosemary, and a smidge of lemon essential oils.
I like the texture thus far. It's a little softer than solid deo. I smushed it into a reused tin and applied it with my fingers today. I already use coconut oil as a body moisturizer, so this wasn't much of a stretch to use a fancied-up version as deodorant. It hasn't been a wild day (that will be the real test), but so far, I feel comfortable, dry, and non-smelly. I also have to say, I love seeing my own little tin in the bathroom rather than yet another plastic package of something-or-other.
I will keep updating! Anyone have a favorite recipe or natural deodorant?

I'm interested to hear what you think about it come the end of your day! I, too, am sort of pining over the Lavanila stuff but man... pricey! I've been thinking about indulging for my birthday (and keeping careful track of how long 1 stick lasts!) but I'd much rather make my own for pennies if it actually works!
Cat- after a full day, night, and a moderately active bike ride the next morning, all I had was a hint of stink...I'd venture to say that's better than regular deo. I haven't felt sweaty, sticky, stinky, or otherwise so far. I would defintely recommend making a 1/2 or 1/4 recipe and giving it a try. I just rub on a few fingertips full and dust with some yummy natural powder for good measure.
I will definitely be keeping up with this one! I have tried several "green" brands of deoderant, too, and have had the same experiences you have! LOL! I don't like to be smelly!
That's a great idea!! I use coconut oil as a morning moisturizer too so I should make some of this. I've just gotten into the habit of reapplying my natural deodorants several times a day.
Thanks for the update, Leslie!
Does it leave any white marks on your clothing?
I'm totally going to make a tiny batch to test out. I'm thinking orange-something scented.... hmmm...
Day 2 and I'm still happy. Tank top season and important events will be a test, but I'm totally replacing my day-to-day deodorant with this.
Re: white marks- I have on a dark sweater today and there is just a hint of white, but nothing serious.
:) I'm still stink-free.
I love it and cannot wait to try! I go back and forth between Tom's calendula (hubby likes woodspice and lemongrass) and KMF Peaceful Patchouli. KMF is wet, tho...so if I am re-applying, I usually go for Tom's. I like the idea of just rubbing it in. I wonder if you can use another base. I have hemp butter and cocoa butter here already. I might try it and get back to you. Has anyone else tried any other base before?
Erika- I don't see any reason why another base wouldn't work just as well. Let us know how it works :)
That looks like it would make you have super soft armpits. :)
My friend's son got premature stinkpit, and she did a lot of hunting before settling on something called Lavilin. Hypo-allergenic, aluminum-free, not tested on animals, and so on. He was four when he started with grown man funk, and it works great. It's about $10 for a very small jar, but she says a little goes a long way, and that it ends up being cheaper than sticks.
excellent tip , i usually use some e.oil and water in a spray bottle as a deodorant and it works wonders ! love all natural products
Testing this out on one pit right now!
I did a combo of cardamom, ginger and lemon oils. Yum.
I did read that the lavender might be the turbo stink fighter...I'm interested to see how the oil combos work out! Post again with any thoughts or experiences :)
I like the sound of this recipe - I'm going to try it! Thanks :)
I just wanted to stop in and tell you that I haven't bought deodorant since you posted this. I use a modified version.
I doubled the dry ingredients and I use tea tree oil as my scent/odor fighter.
I like the thicker consistency and it lasts a long time. This is only the third batch I have made since February.
It worked through the driest Houston summer on record and it continues to work.
Thanks, again for posting this!
